James and his vibes

James and I share an appreciation for post-war architecture and have long planned a photographic session against a concrete backdrop.

The photos on his website are now five years old and he has since grown a beard which makes him look even more distinguished than before. It was time for some new photos ahead of me doing a much needed update to his DIY website.

James composes music for film and tv. He is also very proud of his vibes and his reel to reel tape recorder. These were to be the co-stars.

James Dorman and his vibraphone

We spent our first hour navigating Bristol’s changing road layouts (neither of us drive often in Bristol and we both applaud Bristol’s approach to giving non-car drivers higher priority - besides it gave us an opportunity to chew the cud).

Our first stop was the Ruper Street car park but it was full so we moved on. Next stop - Lower Maudlin Street by the hospital. No luck - it was (rightly) only for NHS staff.

Third time lucky was the car park by the Marriott Hotel. We drove as high as we could knowing that there would be fewer cars. We parked up, carefully set up the vibes and gently lifted them to the various spots. Here are a selection of photos…

Notes

  1. The Rupert Street Car Park was the first to have a continuous spiral parking ramp and is under threat from the wrecking ball. I shall return with my camera soon.

  2. All photos taken with my trusty Leica Q - read my glowing review here.

  3. My main thing is web design, but I also take photos. I travel light. One camera. One lens. No studio lights. Only natural light. If that sound good to you I will happily take some photos for you.
