The best albums of 2019

I listen to music a lot and every December, I geekily share my favourite albums of the year.

It’s been a very good year for music.

Old favourites such as The National and Nick Cave each released one of their best ever albums. Two bands from Dublin (Fontaines D.C. and The Murder Capital) released exciting debut albums which made guitar music fresh and exciting again. William Doyle (formerly East India Youth) returned with an album that revealed more and more on each listen (with the added bonus of appearances from Jonathan Meades and Brian Eno).

As for gigs, it so happens the best of the year have been the last two. The National in Cardiff and Erland Cooper at the Arnolfini in Bristol were very different experiences, but both stayed with me long after the final encore.

And so, in no particular order, here are my favourite albums of 2019:

1) The National - I am Easy to Find

2) Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Ghosteen

3) Michael Kiwanuka - KIWANUKA

4) Erland Cooper - Sule Skerry

5) William Doyle - Your Wilderness Revisited

6) Fontaines D.C - Dogrel

7) Kate Tempest - The Book of Traps and Lessons

8) The Murder Capital - When I Have Fears

9) Taz Modi - Reclaimed Goods

10) Dave - Psychodrama
